The Château des Tourelles is a castle in the commune of Vernon in the Eure département of France.The castle originated in 1196, when Philippe Auguste (Philip II of France), fighting against the king of England, Richard the Lionheart, for possession of Normandy, seized Vernon and made the town a military base.

The Treaty of Le Goulet was signed by Kings John of England and Philip II of France in May 1200. It concerned bringing an end to the war over the Duchy of Normandy and finalising the new borders of what was left of the duchy. The treaty was a victory for Philip in asserting his legal claims to overlordship over John's French lands.

Vernon (pronounced [vɛʁnɔ̃]) is a commune in the department of Eure in the Normandy region in northern France.It lies on the banks of the Seine River, about midway between Paris and Rouen. The city is known for its production of engines by the SNECMA group.
