From the periphery to the center

The Altamura Man is a fossil of the genus Homo discovered in 1993 in a karst sinkhole in the Lamalunga Cave near the city of Altamura, Italy.Remarkably well preserved but embedded in stalagmites and covered in a thick layer of calcite the find was left in situ in order to avoid damage. Research during the following twenty years was based mainly on the documented on-site observations.

Altamura Cathedral (Italian: Duomo di Alamura, Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta), dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is a Roman Catholic cathedral in the city of Altamura, in the Metropolitan City of Bari, Apulia, in southern Italy.Since 1986 it has been the seat of the Bishop of Altamura-Gravina-Acquaviva delle Fonti, formed in that year.

Piazza del Duomo (also piazza Duomo) is the main square of the city of Altamura, Italy. It is located in the center of the historic city center, as well as in the middle of the main street of the city, that is corso Federico II di Svevia. Moreover, Altamura Cathedral, the main church of the city, is located on the square.

The Liceo classico Luca de Samuele Cagnazzi is an Italian high school located in piazza Zanardelli 30, Altamura, Italy, close to the church Chiesa di San Domenico. It is named after Italian scientist Luca de Samuele Cagnazzi.

Altamura Cemetery was built in 1942 and it is still in use. It replaced the previous cemetery (Altmaura Old Cemetery), which is inside the new cemetery. The area of the old cemetery is called il cimitero vecchio ("the old cemetery"). The design of the entrance of Altamura Cemetery was based on the drawings of another design made by engineer Alberto Gennarini in the early years of the XX century.

The Diocese of Altamura-Gravina-Acquaviva delle Fonti (Latin: Dioecesis Altamurensis-Gravinensis-Aquavievensis) is a Roman Catholic diocese in Apulia, southern Italy, created in 1986. In that year, the territorial prelature of Altamura e Acquaviva delle Fonti was united with the diocese of Gravina. The present diocese is a suffragan of the archdiocese of Bari-Bitonto.
