Cumberland Community Forest in the village of Cumberland, BC, in the Comox valley. The forest covers the site of the old Chinatown and Japanese town, which were established by immigrants at the the end of the 19th century, who were brought to Canada to work as coal miners, at half the wages paid to European workers. It’s quite interesting to walk down trails that were once streets in these historical communities, where the forest is now reclaiming the land. An old slag heap from the coal mines is still there revealing evidence of the local history. The community is purchasing more of the forest for community enjoyment and prevent logging
