ASTRON is the Netherlands Institute for Radio Astronomy. Its main office is in Dwingeloo in the Dwingelderveld National Park in the province of Drenthe. ASTRON is part of Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO).

The Dwingeloo Radio Observatory is a single-dish radio telescope near the village of Dwingeloo (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈdʋɪŋəloː]) in the northeastern Netherlands. Construction started in 1954, and the telescope was completed in 1956. The radio telescope has a diameter of 25 m. At the time of completion it was the largest radio telescope in the world, but it was overtaken in 1957 by the 76-m Lovell Telescope.

Ruinen is a village in the Dutch province of Drenthe. It is located in the municipality of De Wolden, about 10 km northwest of Hoogeveen.Ruinen was a separate municipality until 1998, when it became part of De Wolden. The windmill De Zaandplatte has been restored and is open to the public.

Carbon dating indicates that the boat was constructed during the early mesolithic period between 8040 BCE and 7510 BCE.

Spier is a town in the Dutch province of Drenthe. It is a part of the municipality of Midden-Drenthe, and lies about 11 km north of Hoogeveen.In 2001, the town of Spier had 91 inhabitants. The built-up area of the town was 0.036 km2, and contained 35 residences.The statistical area "Spier", which can also include the surrounding countryside, has a population of around 370.
