Kėdainiai (Lithuanian: [kʲeːˈdâːɪnʲɛ] (listen)), also known by several other names) is one of the oldest cities in Lithuania. It is located 51 km (32 mi) north of Kaunas on the banks of the Nevėžis River. First mentioned in the 1372 Livonian Chronicle of Hermann de Wartberge, its population as of 2017 was 24,093.

The Smilga is a river in the Kėdainiai district municipality, in Kaunas County, central Lithuania. It flows for 32 kilometres (20 mi) and has a basin area of 208.8 km2 (80.6 sq mi).It begins near the village of Patranys, in the Krakės eldeship. The Smilga river flows mostly in a southeasterly direction through the Josvainiai forest.

Holy Transfiguration Church is an Eastern Orthodox church in Kėdainiai.The first, wooden Orthodox church in Kėdainiai was constructed in 1643. From 1652 it belonged to an Orthodox monastery of the Holy Transfiguration, which was destroyed by fire in 1771. After this event the monastery was never rebuilt and the monks moved to the Holy Spirit Monastery in Vilnius.
