Passau (German pronunciation: [ˈpasaʊ]') is a town in Lower Bavaria, Germany, also known as the Dreiflüssestadt ("City of Three Rivers") because the Danube is joined there by the Inn from the south and the Ilz from the north.Passau's population is 50,000, of whom about 12,000 are students at the University of Passau, renowned in Germany for its institutes of economics, law, theology, computer science and cultural studies.

The Inn (Latin: Aenus; Romansh: En) is a river in Switzerland, Austria and Germany. It is a right tributary of the Danube and is 518 kilometres (322 mi) long. The highest point of its drainage basin is the summit of Piz Bernina, at 4,049 metres (13,284 ft). The Engadine, the valley of the En, is the only Swiss valley whose waters end up in the Black Sea (via the Danube).

The Ilz (German pronunciation: [ˈɪlt͡s]) is a river running through the Bavarian Forest, Germany. It is a left tributary of the Danube and 40 km (25 mi) in length (69 km (43 mi) including its main source river Große Ohe), during which it travels down a height difference of ~140m.The Ilz is formed at the confluence of its source rivers Große Ohe and Kleine Ohe in Eberhardsreuth.
