Basel ( BAH-zəl, German: [ˈbaːzl̩] (listen)) or Basle ( BAHL; French: Bâle [bɑl]; Italian: Basilea [baziˈlɛːa]; Romansh: Basilea [baziˈleːa] (listen)) is a city in northwestern Switzerland on the river Rhine. Basel is Switzerland's third-most-populous city (after Zürich and Geneva) with about 180,000 inhabitants.

Basel Minster (German: Basler Münster), one of the main landmarks and tourist attractions of the Swiss city of Basel, adds definition to the cityscape with its red sandstone architecture and coloured roof tiles, its two slim towers and the cross-shaped intersection of the main roof. The Swiss inventory of cultural property of national and regional significance lists the Münster as a heritage site of national significance.

The Basel Town Hall (German: Rathaus Basel, locally known as Roothuus) is a 500-year-old building dominating the Marktplatz in Basel, Switzerland.The Town Hall houses the meetings of the Cantonal Parliament as well as the Cantonal Government of the canton of Basel-Stadt. The Great Council Chamber at one time featured a series of frescoes painted in 1522 by Hans Holbein the Younger, which have been lost.

The Elisabethenkirche, or Offene Kirche Elisabethen, is a 19th century church building in the centre of Basel, next to the Theater Basel, in Switzerland. It is a well detailed example of Swiss Gothic Revival style churches. It has a 72 metres (236 ft) tall bell tower and spire. The tower has internal stairs.

The Cartoonmuseum Basel (founded in 1979) is a museum in Basel, Switzerland, that is devoted to cartoons, parodies and pastiches of works of art and artists, comics and caricatures. The Basel museum is the only one of its kind within a radius of 500 kilometers. Encompassing some 3,000 original works by over 700 artists from the 20th and 21st centuries from over three dozen countries, the collection’s holdings are shown in thematic and monografic temporary exhibitions.

The Basel oppidum, known as Basel-Münsterhügel, is an Iron Age fort (oppidum) constructed by the Celtic Rauraci in the second half of the 1st century BC (late La Tène), after the battle of Bibracte (58 BC). The fort was situated on what is now the Münsterhügel in the Swiss city of Basel. The site was excavated by Furger-Gunti in the 1970s.

The Birsig is a rather small river in eastern France and northern Switzerland. Its source is in the village Biederthal, in the French Haut-Rhin department, near the Swiss border. The Birsig is about 21 kilometres (13 mi) long, and its watershed area is about 82 square kilometres (32 sq mi). It flows variably through Swiss and French territory and through the Birsig Valley.

Through its program of temporary exhibitions and events, it contributes to international debates on architecture and urban development as well as related socio-political aspects.
