Do you have time to spare while waiting at Guthrie- Cortland Hospital in Cortland NY? Or want some exercise during your lunch break? I have spent a lot of time at this hospital, and decided to walk the neighborhood instead of sitting in the waiting room. A variation of this route was suggested to me by one of the nurses who also walks to NY Route 281and back. Upon leaving the main entrance of the hospital I walked the safe, quiet, residential neighborhood (Alvena Ave to Copeland to West Main St) up to the busy intersection of Route 281, back down West Main St to Homer Ave. Its a peaceful, flat walk, sidewalks are in pretty good shape, and neighbors/other walkers are friendly. You can skip the parking lot at the end and stick to the sidewalks, I was just “killing time” and getting in lots of steps. An alternative is Alvena to Copeland to Evergreen to 281 to West Main St. I walked this many times and enjoyed it. Another alternative is Alvena to Copeland to Evergreen and then weave your way using the connecting side streets (Smith, Wadsworth, Banks) to make a serpentine pattern. Which ever way you choose, enjoy the fresh air!
