Camillus Park is a community park consisting of 35 acres, located on Pool Rd, off from Route 5, (W. Genesee St) between the Octagon House and St Joseph’s Church in Camillus NY. It is in the Orchard Village neighborhood. Although the Camillus pool is no longer there, it’s been replaced with a splash pad, playground, outdoor gym exercise area, picnic tables and Take-A-Book lending library. Next to that area is a wooded area with several trails, a pavilion, many picnic tables and grills, and some benches, a bath house and the Park Garage.
The wooded area has a large board with a trail map at the trail head, indicating level of difficulty and accessibility for strollers and the handicapped. Trails are well marked and well maintained with natural and gravel surfaces. There are small bodies of water, which make it a breeding ground for mosquitoes in warmer months. Use repellent!
With neighborhood access to the trails, this is a great place (and popular) for dog walking. Shorter trail distances make it a appealing for families with young children to hike or a quick lunch break walk. Tons of squirrels collecting acorns from the oak trees, and chipmunks running about. After your workout, sit on a bench and watch/listen to the resident woodpecker peck at a tree.
The Blue Trail starts with the Red Trail, along the perimeter of the woods near the Splash Pad/playground area. You will pass some picnic tables and barbecue grills, and a bench, then veer to the left and cut through the middle of the woods. You will intersect with the Green Trail, then hook back up with the Red Trail, passing the park garage, and coming out to the parking lot. When you get to the parking lot, take a left, walk past the bathhouse and back to the trail head. It is 0.4 miles, and easy by foot, bike or stroller. Moderate by wheelchair.
This quiet wooded area is a popular place with dog walkers. Those that are there are friendly people. Double thumbs up from me. 👍🏽👍🏽
