The Camillus Forest Unique Area, managed by the New York Department of Conservation (DEC) encompasses 350 acres. It is approximately eight miles west of the city of Syracuse with elevations ranging between 400 and 710 feet. Camillus Forest Unique Area is a popular area for a variety of recreational activities such as: hiking, bird watching, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. The forest's grasslands were once nearly all managed for crop product. Now the grassland habitat is being managed to remain in grassland for the many species that depend upon that cover type. One might even see the less common Bobolink or Savannah sparrow.
I took Trail 3 (red markers, a field) connected to Trail 2 (yellow, field) then Trail1 (blue, mixed) to get to Trail 5 (orange, forested) connecting back up with 1 then 3.
6 Trails, lots of open fields, allowing for lots of sunshine exposure in winter months. Area is on a hill, so very little, if any, flat walking. Good cardio workout.
Great birding opportunities!
Close to Erie Canal Trail
Take NY Route 173 (Warners Road) from Route 5 and head northwest. Turn left onto Thompson Road to enter the property.
Ample parking in parking lot off Thompson Rd.

A stunning panoramic view of Liverpool, Syracuse, Camillus, and far, far beyond. No picture can capture what you can see in person. This view made the hike worth it.
A large, old piece of farming equipment adds interest to the forested area.
