We started the hike right at about 7am. The earlier the better because it starts to get hot mid morning....although most of the trail is shaded but still quite warm. I would have to rate it moderate, not quite hard but my husband and I hike a lot and we normally hike trails that are rated hard so this didn't seem as hard as the ones that we have done. This is such a beautiful trail. The redwoods are just serene along the trail. We actually finished the hike @ 8.5 miles a little over 3 hrs with all the picture taking we did. Easy peasy in the beginning of the hike but after mile 5 where the picnic area is located (Old Church), your incline starts then there is a series of declines and inclines that follow. As always, don't forget your fluids! We would definitely do this hike again.
on my AllTrails calorie tracker it actually says we lost 1800 calories on this hike, but then again it tracks and records the inclines that this app does not track .
