This route is a loop around Hiawatha Lake in Onondaga Park, not to be confused with the more well known Onondaga Lake Park. Onondaga Park is an 82.6-acre park situated in Syracuse's Strathmore neighborhood on the city's south west side. Placed on the National Register of Historic Places, it is rich in history. It is home to man-made Hiawatha Lake, which contains a fountain and a lovely gazebo accessible by a foot bridge. Other unique features are a beautiful rustic, stone arched bridge surrounded by weeping willow trees, and a neoclassical greenhouse. Onondaga Park also features eight tennis courts, three basketball courts, a baseball field, a 50-metre (160 ft) swimming pool, a playground, a pavilion, benches, hills for sledding and scenic views of the city of Syracuse. Onondaga Park consists of two neighboring sections, Lower Onondaga Park and Upper Onondaga Park. Upper and Lower Onondaga parks are linked with nearby Kirk Park via Onondaga Creek Boulevard. The three parks, together with the parkway, form the only interconnected park system in Syracuse. I suggest Upper Onondaga Park where you will find Hiawatha Lake. This Pacer Route follows a walking path around the lake, 0.6 miles in length. It is a natural path in which the grass has been worn down from people walking it. The path as well as the park is dog, child, and stroller friendly and some parts are wheelchair accessible. Park entrances can be accessed via Summit Ave off Glenwood Ave, or Roberts Ave (or various other neighborhood side streets). A picturesque and lovely park for all ages.
